Such a time. Nature is a refuge in times such as these, both in the reminder of how precious and fragile life is, as well as how competitive and cruel animals can be in the fight for survival.
Lovely story. According to Native American legend, the turtle symbolizes Mother Earth. This is because turtles are one of the few animals that carry their homes on their backs, just as the Earth carries all of us. The turtle is also a reminder that we should take care of our planet, just like our bodies and minds. They represent the way of peace – whether it's external or internal. It is considered as the Peace-Maker.
Yes, we want the next generations to have opportunities to see wild animals in nature, living their lives and taking their place in the fabric of life. Thanks for commenting, Mary. It's good to know you're out there, cherishing nature.
It amazes me that newly hatched turtles can wait an extra 6 months after hatching before taking food or water. They must be torpid there in the ground. We had about given up hope on those babies, and then one day I found them coming out of the ground.
We put wire mesh on a 2x4-boards frame over it. It's the path you probably don't follow, that goes south from our house down toward the pond that belongs to our neighbors due south from us.
I like how--sometimes--humans work with our animal buddies when they kinda need help. I sometimes watch (ok, get hypnotied) facebook 'life-hacks' and the animal clips especially appeal.
Today I saw one that blew me awaaaay: A small whale kept circling and circling and circling around a boat, until the folks finally got the message. They put on scuba gear (about 8 of them) and soon found a very large Mother whale completely tangled in fish net. Yow. They worked until they were exhausted and out of air, but, TG, in time to cut it all off of her. The two swam away. Bet they were beyond grateful. I am too! Sigh. (Love the turtle's art-bottom!)
Very fine story about the whale. It fascinates me, the many stories about whales accepting human help, that somehow they understand that not all humans are their enemies, even after centuries of persecution at (our) hands. Thank you for your nice comment.
What a great story, definitely enhanced by the educational photos. I am impressed with Mama Turtle's camouflage abilities. Nature is so amazing!
Thanks Dakota. Nature is indeed amazing.
Thank you for the information and the photos. Stunning.
Thanks, Suzanna. Your poem on on non-affirmative Affirmative Action decision had me with my head in my hands this morning. (https://suzannadebaca.substack.com/p/nothing-is-affirmative)

How marvelous! I had no idea they'd sometimes stay in the ground until the following Spring. It seems wise and safer.
