Delightful !! I have a pair who have been visiting my open bird feeder for three years now. They are very friendly, and don’t mind if I stand close by to appreciate their beauty.

Thanks Diane for the delightful story. I learned the difference between male and female nuthatches and their forever life together! Thank you! We are enjoying watching the nuthatches come to our peanut and sunflower feeders. I will have to watch for "couples" and any territory displays!!

400 beats a minute and that's at rest?!? Wow! I can't imagine how it feels to live like that. It would be very different to be a nuthatch!

Stunning! We've had a pair visit our feeders just 2 of our 7 winters so far here in Maine. We commonly have a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches year-round, but the White-breasted a real treat for us :) Here's hoping we'll see them more in the future! (none so far this year)

It is odd how some words just sit there in our brains until we find out how they got there. I was surprised too when I realized what nuthatch means. Thanks Sallie for reading and commenting.

I didn’t know about the meaning of the nuthatch’s name, that he/she hacks the seeds before eating them; that’s amazing!

I love this post! You sound so much like me, standing on the warm side of the window, watching the tiny birds go about their days. We have at least 3 nuthatches here who visit our feeders. That is a change from when we only ever had one. I think the third one may be the offspring of the other two.

Do you also get the brown creepers, who only go up the trunk and not down? I love to watch them both.

Happy winter birdwatching to you, Diane!

O how easy, how simple…how…silly

To take the abundance of Good

For granted!

Nature’s sweet birds surely do not:

Alert to each Offering, each tiny seed, each

Place to store it, save it for their mate…

It’s all so chock-a-block-full of Wisdom-Messages,

Crammed with Missives for us humans: How to live!

How to love! How to Appreciate! How to Share!

Sigh.

Thank You, Mom-Nature!

Thank you, Mom-Nature’s Messenger:

Dear Diane!

Thank you for Tuning In;

Turning On to The Important Things;

Dropping Out of the Inessentials!

And for Sharing!!

Love to you,
