Both birds arrived at the same moment. Blue Jay had the high ground and was bigger and looked fierce. But Red-bellied Woodpecker faced it down.

Jay departed at once and left Woodpecker in possession.

Blue Jay and Red-bellied Woodpecker seek a meeting of minds.

Lovely look at these two. We made it to our hotel in Auckland after spending all night on the plane. I slept some I think more than Steve. The weird thing is at the end of the flight after landing in Auckland some men came aboard and sprayed insecticide to kill any insects that came in with us. So much for Green NZ. I flinch at the thought of what it does to people exposed to it.
