Rain was promised, so I went outside to get my Sugar Snap peas into the ground. As I knelt, trowel in hand, I heard a bluebird’s notes. For the first time this year, a bluebird perched in the garden, watching me.
He flew to the old wooden birdhouse. He did not seem afraid. This is probably the same guy who nested here last year. If so, he’s used to sharing the garden with me. Maybe he remembers the mealworms I supplied last nesting season.
I didn’t see a female. Has he found a mate yet?
Before I left, I looked in the birdhouse. Yesterday it was barren. Today, half a dozen strands of grass were coiled into a loop. Ahh. The beginning of a bluebird nest. I closed up the birdhouse, with a great big grin.

How fun to welcome back a friend!
Lovely to have a bluebirds nesting at your place. I don't see them very often here. I look forward most to the return of the barn swallows who catch the many bugs that are around our garden.
